Newest Land Rover Range Rover is lighter, stronger, and more economical than ever before. While Land Rover has maintained the same basic design language for the new range-topping SUV, you may not realize just how much has changed under the sheet metal.
With the exception of the load-with-everything-but-a-crystal-lamp Autobiography Edition, Range Rover Supercharged is the ultimate expression of a Land Rover SUV super. Powered by a 510-horsepower supercharged V-8, the drive is transferred to all four wheels through a very capable all-terrain Land Rover hardware.
You've heard it before, about how the majority of SUV owners never really put the wheels into something more dangerous than a gravel parking lot of the nearest gardening center. Land Rover is not going to let the general 'softening' the average SUV affect how companies go about engineering vehicles, however.
In the Range Rover Supercharged, off-road capability legendary brand remains intact - even though it is a highly automated system means you can let the truck do most of the thinking. If Bentley build an SUV, the result may look and feel very much like this. Range Rover feels very solid - all controls have a good weight to them - and well planted on the road. There is no float or bounce over rough and uneven pavement. Balance of ride and handling make this SUV is very easy and, believe it or not, is actually quite pleasant to drive in all types of conditions.
Range Rover offers 32.1 cu ft of cargo volume. Fold down the rear seat, however, and this increases to 71.7 cu cave. ft
Much of the credit goes to a new lightweight aluminum chassis truck. Weight savings vary depending on each trim level, but even the Supercharged models loaded as my test car rings in at about 500 lbs. less than a generation out. It was a substantial reduction in weight helps driving dynamics, while also providing an important boost to fuel economy.
Of course, what you are actually buying a Range Rover is a long list of luxury features. Supercharged models come with everything from brilliantly clear Meridian sound system, panoramic sunroof for widespread, along with all the leather, wood, and metal trim you'd expect in an SUV with six-figure sticker price.
The 510-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine is quite phenomenal, if not the most economical choice in the lineup. A supercharged V-6 is available on lower trim levels of the Range Rover. Rear seat occupants are also treated to their own temperature and ventilation control, not to mention the seats are equipped with heating and cooling functions. Spacious room in the back, though not luxurious, and the third-row seating option is currently only available in the Range Rover Sport model (and even that one is only suitable for children). While we feel it is important, it is worth mentioning a boost Range Rover recently in fuel economy is still generating an average of just 20 mpg highway. It was a solid mid-pack in the world of the SUV, but still quite thirsty - and helps explain why the Land Rover working on diesel and hybrid variations of the Range Rover, due to be shown later this year at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
