Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Custom
2012 Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Custom |
In 2012 Super Glide Custom continues the tradition of representing the company's core product of Milwaukee: a car that sticks to the classic Harley styling, low seat height with a relaxed fit ergonomic fit and is supported by the 45 -, air-cooled, pushrod V-big-bore Twin. Super Glide Custom, in many respects, is a Harley-Davidson.
SGC perpetuate lineage Super Glide but carries bloodlines into the 21st century with the comforts such as fuel injection, which offers precise throttle response, and electric start - far from the original Super Glide kickstart-only method of firing up Big Twin.
As part of the Dyna line, SGC enjoy modern refinement such as the latest generation of Harley switchgear, now with a new, ergonomically friendly for the buttons and switches that operate with soft switching on or off different than the position previously switchgear. A flash-to-graduate high-beam switch buttons integrated into the lamp, while the gear-position indicator and RPM readings are now part of the LCD inset in a tank-mounted instruments.
A new advanced ECU system and electricity not only reduces the number of cables required to S'Glide, but also capable of handling faster processing speeds for things like ABS are now available only as part of the optional Security Package ($ 1,195). For 2012 Harley makes special updates to ABS on Dynas with the way the dimensions are reduced to units of a single electro-hydraulic control. Expansion capabilities for system diagnostics means Harley can use one control module for both front and rear brake units rather than separately for each set of brakes.
Other upgrades are available for 2012 is a new Harley Chrome Profile Tubeless laced (spoke) wheels.
From a distance looks like a wheel circle, but viewed up close you will notice their generous width and smooth edges that blend perfectly with Michelin tires blazing. Chrome finish on the outskirts of the wheels shiny and lustrous, giving them the appearance of liquid metal.
Our only gripe with the wheel is regrettable location of the tire-wheel balance weights. On our test unit load that comes directly to RIM, sticking out like a sore thumb in the appeal of this otherwise classy beautiful rims. We will have a choice, not to see the kind of heavy-mounted spoke wheels.
A Harley Classic View, and Ride
Super Glide Custom straddling a snap thanks to particularly low 26.5-inch seat height should allow almost everyone at least average height and inseam to secure either a flat shoe factory.
Short-ish range for style handlebar ergo Buckhorn is the quality of welcome, however, also a short distance to the seat-pegs. Some riders may appreciate the relationship pegs / seat, but the placement of control mid round rubber pegs that exacerbate short distances and at times creates a strange feeling, as if the knee up higher than they should.
The SGC rider triangle is generally suitable for any size rider, but as you can see here the peg-to-seat short-distance position the rider knee high, well above the back of the fuel tank.
Editor Duke, Troy Siahaan and I own all the steps in about 5 feet 8 inches, while the new-ish man, Tom Roderick, close to six-foot high dashing. No wonder that Tom found the SGC pin placement was not interesting, but we were all equally disappointed with the fellas flat narrow spot created by the location of the peg '.
Another area where the Custom got a short in the rear suspension travel, only 3.1 inches. "Even my minimal weight causes the shocks to the bottom of the larger mounds," notes Kevin. When the road surface is mostly in good repair, SGC is a smooth ride. Another unfortunate byproduct of low rise tilt angle is limited. Harley claims 29.5 degree lean to the right side, with 30.9 degrees to the left.
Augering left side footpeg rubber into asphalt is not very intimidating if you've canceled your peg or two days, but trying to turn right to the same degree of confidence that will quickly produce a loud sound confusing part in the asphalt.
A hose clamp holding the muffler heat shield in the lower places will shave down to near nothingness. On our bike clamps now rendered useless as the head of the screw all but destroyed, and even lower exhaust itself shows signs of minor contact with the road. It is not necessarily a new phenomenon on Harley models with limited suspension travel and a low seat height, but we continue to indicate a tendency to touch down as the beginning of friendly warning.
New, updated switchgear features a more ergonomic shape, toggling function improved and flash-to-pass feature integrated into the switch the high beam / low.
SG Custom Twin Cam 96 (1584cc) is the center of attention on a Harley. A run at the Gene Thomason Racing dyno to see the best results of 64.5 hp at 5000 rpm and 81.8 ft-lb at 3250 rpm healthy. Claiming SG curb weight of 679 pounds, while not hairy, contributing to feelings of TC96 is more the spirit of what the dyno shows. Victory 1597cc Thunderbird, while more powerful than the SGC, tips in at 746 pounds ready to plump-up.
In line Dyna TC96 is rubber-mounted, which means there is a 'go' whole lotta shaking on, "especially at idle and during compression braking," states Kevin. Once at the mercy of Big Twin smooths out a lot, especially at cruising speeds, but Tom was still detectable vibration at various points in the rev range depending on the choice of gear.
We commend Harley for implementing ABS in many product lines, either as standard equipment or part of the package of choice - the automaker has made some bold leaps. The presence of the system is very no eye, save for a small sign that lead wires from each wheel hub. And while not a bit annoying ABS available, the system does not function adequately. Unfortunately, the performance of a single disk brakes and calipers up front just lackluster.
"I feel like I have to brace the front brake lever hard enough to slow the bike down," commented the expert racer Troy. "Braking power is actually decent, but like the rear brake, I could use a little more feel of the system."
Heart of Harley Big Twin on Surprising Value
Super Glide Custom is not without fault, but with some creative shopping in the aftermarket bikes are a number of weaknesses in the understanding of ordinary people to drugs. HD Twin Cam 103 which has replaced the TC96 as standard issue for a number of Harley's Big Boy in 2012, but the 96-incher powering the Super Glide Custom is still a large displacement V-Twin American icon.
Super Glide Custom embody all the qualities of the elements that make Harley-Davidson's most recognized automobile brands in the world.
While the Super Glide custom, fortunately, light years removed from the original Super Glide, still covers the spirit and essence of heritage icons of Harley-Davidson Big Twin. If you are looking for models that represent the core of the Harley, you can have the SGC 2012 starting $ 12,999.
